SMS of Death Could Crash Many Mobile Phones 2019

"SMS of Death" Could Crash Many Mobile Phones

The phones in many people's pockets todays are miniature personal computers and they are just as PC to viruses and other security problems. But research presented at a conference in Germany shows that phones don't even have to be smart to be vulnerable hackers.

Using short Message Services (SMS) communications-message can be sent between mobile phones. Text Message, the SMS protocol can be used to transmit small programs, called "Binaries" that run on a phone. Network operator uses these files to change the setting on a device remotely. The researcher used the same approach to attack phones. They performed their tricks on handsets made by Nokia, LG, Samsung, Motorola, Sony, Ericsson and Micromax, a popular Indian cell-phone manufacturer.

Carrier networks often aggravate the attacks by bombarding the target with the same malicious message, making them an inexpensive way to take a phone completely offline.

The retransmission happens as a result of the way most carrier networks are designed. When they send SMS, or short message service, texts they cache the message until the phone responds with an acknowledgement indicating it has been properly received. If the answer isn't transmitted, the network will resend the message for hours or days at a time, disabling the phone in process.

Even is cases when the message aren't resent, Nokia phones are equipped with a feature dubbed the watchdog, which is designed to protect by shutting it down after receiving three malformed messages. The SMS cause the nokia screen to go white and then reboots the phone, causing it to disconnect from the network. Sending the message while a call is in progress will terminate the conversation.

The SMS used to trash Nokia phones was described an 8-bit class 0 (Flash SMS) with certain TP-UD payload. Message with different specifications can be used to take our handsets made by other manufacturers.

The attacks could be used in targeted attacks against social enemies and business rivals, but the researchers say there's also the potential for vulnerabilities to be exploited in a more widespread fashion by using bulk SMS services.

Now a days the phones manufacturers will never bother fixing the bug….Why should they? This works to their advantage because we people will just buy a new phone and "renew" their plan for two more years……so bugs like this work to the network advantage.

This message can be disabled through GSM, GSM should have had a means to disable the sending of SMS to the handsets. If you aren't using SMS doesn't stop someone sending DOS message to you phone. If you do not use SMS, don't think you are safe you need to deactive it. If you don't use SMS, you can ask your carrier to block them.
